Proper Neck Curve
A normal, healthy upper neck has a backward bend, which helps to balance the weight of the head. This is essential for maintaining correct posture. When the curvature of the neck disappears because of bad posture/poor habits, our alignment is thrown off balance. Eventually, neck misalignment can cause a condition called Forward Head Posture (FHP), which causes the head to slump forward—the opposite direction from its normal state. This can cause degenerative effects in the spine of the neck: speeding arthritis, chronic pain, limited range of motion, and increased risk of muscle strain.
In the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, a study cites that a 5-year-old child’s ADHD symptoms disappeared when the neck curvature was realigned through chiropractic care. There is also evidence that chiropractic treatment can reduce FHP and help maintain the neck’s natural curve. In another study published by the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, chiropractic biophysics (CBP) combined with spinal manipulation decreased patients' chronic neck pain intensity in 38 visits over 14.6 weeks, as indicated by increases in the cervical alignment.
Acne is caused by blockages around hair follicles. Spiking hormones in adolescence increase sebum production, which can trigger acne. Although many teens and adults rely on prescription drugs to treat acne, these can come at a cost. Common anti-acne drugs have been linked to: birth defects, depression, inflammatory bowel disease, and antibiotic resistant bacteria. Taking oral contraceptives for acne can also cause blood clots and depression.
The good news is that there are natural avenues that you can take to reduce acne breakouts, such as avoiding processed foods. According to the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology and the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprology—Vitamin A, zinc, coconut oil, neem oil, diluted tea tree oil, and omega-3 fatty acids promote healthy, clear skin. Other naturally derived anti-acne ingredients include: salicylic acid, alpha-hydroxy acids, azelaic acid, and lauric acid.
Chiropractic care can help acne by providing the necessary nerve function of the organs that affect the skin. If your body is misaligned, then your nervous system cannot fully function properly. The T-9 through T-11 vertebrae of the thoracic spine could be affected and aggravating your acne. Your Doctor of Chiropractic will perform spinal manipulations to adjust and restore this area.
Migraines & Headaches
Migraines are commonly sparked by the following factors: weather (82.5%), stress (66.7%), and hormonal changes (51.4%). Lack of sleep is also a big contributing factor for migraines. Changes in artery size inside and around the skull, as well as neck injuries can restrict blood flow in and around the skull, thus contributing to migraines. Migraine prescription drugs and medicines are often ineffective, especially for migraines that escalate into constant throbbing.
Not all migraines are created equal. Migraines with aura and migraines without aura are the most common. Migraines with aura spark visual changes like jagged lines, dots, and flashing lights, and in addition, they increase your risk of stroke. Retinal migraines are migraines with aura where only one eye’s vision is affected. This temporary vision loss is more common in women than men. A different kind of migraine, basilar migraines, can cause dizziness, confusion, balance, and speech problems. Chiropractic care restores proper nervous system functioning through alignments, as it decreases the nerve pain signals to the brain and reduces muscle tension.
Headaches are common to everybody, and vertebral subluxations is a main reason for them. Cervicogenic headaches are caused by neck problems that are not treated. According to the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, chiropractic has been shown to have a “significant positive effect on cervicogenic headaches.” A different study of 613 people found that chiropractic adjustments were as effective as migraine medication, but rather offered better long-term results without the drug’s side effects.
- Spinal Dysfunction
You have probably heard that if your spine is healthy, you are still young. Spinal dysfunction is linked with reduced blood to the brain (cerebral hypoperfusion), which can increase your risk of: brain cell damage, stroke, dementia, and migraines. Vertebral subluxations are areas in the spine where vertebrae are slightly misaligned or motion is restricted, and these subluxations are related to cerebral hypoperfusion problems, according to the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. In a study using CT scans, the more severe a person’s neck pain, the greater likelihood of cerebral hypoperfusion. Vertebral subluxations may alter the nervous system function, further increasing the risk of hypoperfusion. Doctors of Chiropractic remove these subluxations with gentle and effective maneuvers (chiropractic adjustments), which relieve pressure, restore range of motion, and improve nerve function.
- Whiplash Injury
Car crashes at speeds as slow as 2.5 mph can cause injury, according to the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. Whiplash is an injury caused by sudden neck extension, and its effects can include: pain and stiffness in the neck, low back pain, fatigue, dizziness, mental and emotional disturbances, chronic headaches, numbness, and nausea. In addition to spraining and straining the neck, whiplash can also misalign the vertebrae. According to the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, serious effects of whiplash can develop months or years after injury. To relieve the pain of whiplash, you can use ice and perform normal activities.
Traffic Injury Prevention suggests driving newer cars to reduce whiplash risk, and Spine suggests positioning the head restraint high and close to the head. We recommend a chiropractic visit before insurance settlements to uncover hidden injuries! Remember that prompt care is always best, as up to 93% of whiplash patients who receive chiropractic adjustments have shown improvement (Journal of Orthopedic Medicine).
